It should be noted that due to various factors, the first carbonization often cannot achieve the desired level of thoroughness, so secondary carbonization is required to further generate tantalum carbide. During this process, the carbon content, raw material particle size and purity, loading method, carbonization temperature and time are all key factors that affect the quality of the final product.
In addition, although some methods can prepare block shaped or large particle shaped TaC, the industry tends to use ball milling to prepare micrometer sized tantalum carbide powder. This method combines ball milling under vacuum and argon atmospheres, as well as high-temperature reduction and carburizing reactions, to obtain fine powders with particle sizes greater than 2 μ m.
In order to improve the reaction speed and address the shortcomings of traditional methods, microwave reduction method has been proposed. This method can effectively improve the diffusion rate of the powder, reduce the reaction temperature by 50-100 ℃, and shorten the processing time, thereby achieving energy and cost savings. The preparation process involves using microwave to reduce Ta2O5 and carbon black within the temperature range of 1250 ℃ -1500 ℃, with a heating rate exceeding 100 ℃/min.

When the temperature exceeds 1400 ℃, Ta2O5 will be completely converted to TaC, and no intermediate phase or low valence oxide of Ta will be generated during the process.
In addition, chemical synthesis is also a commonly used solid-phase method for preparing TaC. Under specific conditions, tantalum and carbon undergo a direct chemical reaction to form TaC. Chen Weiliang et al. synthesized TaC in a vacuum environment at 1500 ℃ and conducted in-depth research on the carbonization mechanism of tantalum powder. They found that within the actual carbonization temperature range of 1300-2100 ℃, the standard free enthalpy of formation of Ta2C is much lower than that of TaC (about 52-57kJ/mol lower), so the trend of Ta2C formation is very obvious in the early stage of carbonization.
**Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) has also been used to prepare TaC coatings. This method requires the use of the source material TaCl5. At 500K, TaCl5 will vaporize and be introduced into the CVD furnace to deposit TaC together with other reducing atmospheres.
Finally, the hot wire CVD method has also been explored for the preparation of TaC coatings. This method activates the gas deposition process by heating tantalum wire above 2000 ℃. Due to the high melting point of tantalum, the tantalum wire does not deform during high-temperature deposition, ensuring a high deposition rate.
1.2. Comparison and selection of preparation methods
Various preparation methods have their own advantages in efficiency and cost. For example, microwave reduction method is a research hotspot due to its energy saving and high efficiency, especially suitable for the rapid generation of tantalum carbide powder. Choosing the appropriate preparation method requires consideration of product quality and production costs.
2. Application of Tantalum Carbide
2.1. Application in Hard Alloys
Tantalum carbide plays an important role in multiple fields. It is often used as a component of hard alloys, endowing the alloy with excellent hardness and wear resistance. Tantalum carbide limits grain growth in hard alloys and works synergistically with other components to enhance the hardness and thermal stability of the alloy. The excellent melting point and thermodynamic stability of tantalum carbide make it an ideal component for hard alloys.
Many experimental studies have shown that adding TaC can increase the solid solubility of W in the γ phase, thereby improving the physical properties and thermal shock resistance of the alloy.
2.2. Applications in the Electronic Industry
In recent years, transition metal carbides have attracted much attention due to their excellent chemical stability, high hardness, strong oxidation and corrosion resistance, as well as low electrical resistivity. Tantalum carbide is widely used in the electronics industry, especially as an electronic material. Its conductivity and high temperature stability have earned it widespread recognition in electronic components and high-performance tools. Nanomaterials have broad prospects for application.
2.3. Applications in High Temperature Alloys
In the carbide family, tantalum carbide (TaC) stands out for its excellent high-temperature resistance. Tantalum carbide has superior high-temperature resistance, but it is susceptible to thermal shock in high-temperature mechanical applications. Tantalum carbide exhibits excellent mechanical properties over a wide temperature range of 2900-3200 ℃. Combining with carbon/carbon composite materials can improve performance.
